The i Paper – Real life editor, digital and now also print (2018-present)
- Produce strong exclusives and cover a range of topics including health, education, inequality, women's issues, relationships and personal finance
- Been a top performer for web hits, reaching nearly 1 million monthly views
- Alongside specialism do weekend shifts reporting general breaking news (e.g. politics and global developments)
- In the site’s infancy, was in charge of editing the site’s home page and managing its social media as part of a rota of senior staff
- Supervised a freelance real life writer and a junior staffer
Volunteer mentor – The Social Mobility Foundation (2021)
- Coached aspiring journalists who are high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds
MailOnline – Health reporter (2017-2018)
- Worked to tight deadlines writing breaking news for the world’s biggest news site
- Sourced own strong exclusives that were often featured on the home page
- Proved my ability to turn complex information into clear, engaging copy e.g. reporting new scientific journal studies
- Undertook health editor duties on occasions including selecting news to cover, managing the channel, liaising with the paper and US desk and monitoring analytics
Candis – Deputy editor (2015-2016)
- Responsible for day-to-day running of the magazine – ensuring it was produced on time, to budget and to high standards – along with website content
- Managed a team of five, conducted appraisals and developed a network of freelancers
- Flat-planned, commissioned and edited a range of features, including celebrity, charity, health, beauty, fashion, food, travel and fiction
- Carefully planned work flow with design and photographic teams juggling multiple projects
- In charge of an editorial budget and as part of a board distributed charity funding
Freelance journalist (2015)
- Wrote for the national press, including Mail Online, Mirror Online and Love It!
OMG! magazine (Now merged with Love It!) – Assistant editor (2014-2015)
- Sourced, wrote and commissioned real life stories and assisted with flatplanning, overseeing layout/design, proofreading and subbing
- Managed the magazine's social media which included sourcing competitions
Trinity Mirror – Sub-editor of heritage titles (2013-2014)
- Worked mainly on the Mirror’s World War 100 magazines to mark the centenary
- Generated content ideas, wrote and commissioned features, and designed eye-catching pages
- Displayed a meticulous eye for detail subbing magazines consistently to house style
Liverpool Unites – Fundraising and PR manager (2012-2013)
- Managing Liverpool ECHO’s in-house children’s charity as sole worker demanded self-initiative
- Developed and implemented a strategy to raise an ambitious target for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, though events, community initiatives and editorial campaigns involving case studies and recruitment of celebrity ambassadors
- Launched print advertising campaigns across the ECHO and its sister titles
Newsquest (North West) –
Features writer/sub-editor (2011-2012)
- Wrote and designed promotional features across 12 weekly local newspapers
- Steered the relaunch of a glossy magazine Wirral Lifestyle as content editor
Hull Daily Mail – Senior news reporter (2009-2011)
- Worked at the fast-paced city office for the Hull Daily Mail and the district office in a small team under pressure to produce daily front pages and edition pages for the East Riding Mail
- Responsible for reporting three magistrates’ courts and health in the East Riding
- Covered inquests, public enquiries, council meetings, general and local elections, business, crime, health, GMC hearings, human interest, FOI and various events
- Produced videos and content for the web
